Loving People Whose Choices Disturb Us

December 1, 2016When we experience tumultuous times we may not believe we can create calm in the midst of chaos. Whether that chaos is related to family, relationship, health, money or career we can utilize some simple techniques to help us approach our issues with more clarity.
We can quiet ourselves and explore different approaches that elude us when we feel overwhelmed. We can change our attitude about what we are dealing with, and if we can’t “figure it out” we can still benefit from quieting our minds. When we return to the issue later on, we may see or hear something that was not apparent before. We can develop patience and an alternative way of approaching the problem or chaos.
Here are ‘starter’ tips:
Relax The Mind. Tell ourselves that we will manage to get through this. We will handle whatever the obstacle is. If we need a plan, believe that we will create one. Change the internal voice which says, “I’ll never do it,” or “I can’t find a solution,” or “This is impossible.” Visualize doing whatever it is that needs to be done.
Repeat A Positive Phrase. As we breathe slowly and deeply, listen to our internal voice say, “I can do this.” I will find a way.” I may not see how now, but I will not give up.” Periodically, with the inhalation, say the word “calm,” and exhale the word “ease.”
Remember Our Triumphs. It can be helpful to remind ourselves of previous challenges and how we got through them. When we recall times when we have “walked through fires” we reinforce our confidence and strength.
Enlist Others. Think of those who have helpful information, a positive attitude, and who know us and would like to help in some ways. Generally, a shared difficulty is less difficult.
