Minds Matter – Behavioral Health in Pandemics and Beyond
January 29, 2021As the new year begins, you can inspire someone with acceptance, hope, and a reminder that we all have a need to begin again. During this past year we have literally been living behind closed doors and although we still need to be careful, we can embark on a new beginning while metaphorically opening the door and letting in fresh air along with fresh ideas. We can actively be engaged and listen to others who may be having trouble opening doors of their own; helping them to take small steps toward achieving their goals.
Each of us can show up to encourage someone who is going through a difficult time. Most of us appreciate hearing a kind word when we feel discouraged, are experiencing loss, or are facing a tough choice. We can remind them that “new beginnings are often disguised as painful endings.” (Lao Tzu). Helping someone take a first step as they struggle to begin anew can be a true act of kindness.
We need to remember that our role is not to solve their problem for them. That is their path. But we can be there, fully present, with an open heart as they consider their options. We can provide a safe space while they explore. We can listen without judgement. We can reflect back what we hear as we listen to what they share. We can remind them of their capabilities and talents and how they handled challenges in the past. We can suggest possibilities that were previously out of reach. We can talk about real-life situations they can relate to. We can share what is that you valued about them. Just by being with them, we remind them that they are not alone.
