Greetings!
Over the past several weeks there has been
much needed discussion about words, and the
thoughts behind those words. We all respond
differently to what is acceptable and
unacceptable, offensive and stupid. But what
would happen if we just thought more before
we spoke? If we really considered the
effects of our words on others, as well as
how those words reflect on us, we might think
differently about what we say.
Much of what we say is mindless. Much of what
we say is critical or negative. Try to stop
talking and listen to your thoughts. You can
discover clarity in silence. Ghandi practiced
one day of silence every week. If one day is
too much, try a period of time when you are
consciously not talking. Instead, pay
attention to your thoughts. Creating and
Fostering a Healthy Socio-Emotional
Environment encourages you to pay close
attention to what you say and develop a
sense of competency in your social
relationships.
Speaking of healthy socio-emotional
environments, consider how your thoughts
affect you personally. Keeping a
Positive Attitude offers tips for dealing
with inner thoughts and feelings proactively.

Sanity SaversTM Creating and Fostering a Healthy Socio-Emotional Environment |
 |
We all need to care about other people and
feel as if we are cared about. It is part of
what makes us human. We need to understand
and respect everyone's personal boundaries
and when we are socially competent, we pick
up on the cues that let us know what and
where those boundaries are. Social competency
is about recognizing someone else's need as
well as asserting your own need. It is also
about accepting that when you are engaged
with another person you accept responsibility
for your actions.
So, how do you ensure social competency? It
helps when we feel confident in social
interactions with other people so that we
will take risks and stretch to meet and
engage with people who are different from us.
In this way we will likely expand our
personal horizons and have compassion for
others as well as for ourselves. When you are
socially competent you have a healthy sense
of self and you choose appropriate social,
communication and problem solving skills. You
avoid making another person feel diminished
in any way.
- Learn, Master, Succeed -
Learning something, mastering something and
succeeding contribute to helping you feel
socially competent. Not every interaction
will be positive but the more successful
interactions you have the more you can have
them.
- Seek Role Models- Look to
excellent role models to see how they react
and interact in situations that you find
particularly stressful or challenging.
- Be Patient- Understand that
practicing patience may be at the root of a
successful experience.
Socially competent people accept what they
cannot change and adapt accordingly, usually
without malice.
Anyone who wants to become more socially
competent needs to maximize opportunities to
teach, practice, enhance, model, and learn
the very skills they hope to develop.

Sanity SaversTM TIPS Keeping a Positive Attitude Focus on What Makes You Feel Resilient |
 |
When you are presented with challenges, it is
easy to become overwhelmed and despondent. Be
honest with your feelings, but concentrate
your efforts toward maintaining a positive
attitude.
Some tips to consider:
- Take One Day at a Time -
Don't waste energy worrying about something
that may occur in the future. Focus on
immediate issues and approach each day
positively.
- Find and Follow Positive Mentors-
Regularly interact with people who can share
their experiences, advice, and support.
Support groups can be wonderful resources for
contacts and information to help you widen
your circle of mentors and friends.
- Trust Yourself and Your Inner Voice-
Answer only to your conscience, and do the
best that you can do at the time. By
listening to your inner voice, you can get to
know yourself in ways you never did before.
- Look at What You Have Accomplished-
Rather than focusing too much on what needs
to be done, take some time to consider what
you have already done. Be kind to yourself
and feel good about your accomplishments.
- Keep and Use a Sense of Humor- Be
with people who make you feel good and don't
take yourself to seriously. Remember,
cracking up with laughter is better than
cracking under the stress.
Accept that change and growth are part of
this process.
